Letter from the President
February 20, 2019 Sierra Moms

Hi friends!

This month I wrote an article for our sponsor,Macaroni Kid. Because finding time to write is almost as rare as my kids not losing it on a rainy afternoon, I’m killing two birds with one stone and sharing the article with you here!

Feel free to share this with any friends who may be considering joining Sierra Moms!

When you hear the words “moms group,” what immediately comes to mind? Do you picture a particular type of person? A specific activity? Maybe it makes you think of a general vibe?

Whatever you picture when you hear “Sierra Moms,” you’re probably right—at least partially right. Our diverse group of more than 200 moms includes women who come from a range of backgrounds, professions and interests. So whatever mom you think is part of the club is here, along with many others!

Sierra Moms is an all-volunteer organization that pulls from the talents and interests of its membership to guide our vision and organize the many social, educational and philanthropic activities we provide each month. Our strength is in the wide range of abilities, ideas and skills that each member brings to the table. Our leadership is comprised of an 11-member board of directors as well as an additional 20 women who volunteer to organize and lead various groups.

While each of our members has their own reason for joining and getting involved, we
hear a few key drivers most often:

  1. Being new to the Folsom/El Dorado Hills area. So many of our members have been transplants to the area and Sierra Moms helps women not only acclimate to their new town, but also build a strong social network to make a new place to feel like home.
  2. To keep professional skills sharp. Our members stay at home, work full time, and have hybrid work inside/outside of the home situations. For those who have stepped back from their careers while their children are young,Sierra Moms provides an opportunity to keep using and growing professional skills. Members of our leadership team are or have been marketing and communications directors, real estate agents, film industry professionals, educators, sales professionals, nutritionists and more. They all bring solid talent and passion to the team, which helps keep our organization strong.
  3. To give back. Sierra Moms is a 501(c)3 nonprofit and our work not only benefits our members, but also the greater community. In addition to providing tangible benefit to our members, we’re able to give back to the community through charitable events and collection drives to donate needed resources to local families and children.
  4. To make our time as moms of young children more enjoyable. Yes, children are wonderful. But they are also a ton of work and moms need a strong community of other moms with whom to commiserate, get ideas, feel supported, and to relax and have fun! In addition to daytime, kid-friendly events, we also have moms-only events to provide a break and a built-in social circle. It can be awkward to make mom friends (we’ve all seen the painfully true social media memes about it), and we try to make it as painless as possible!

If you share any of these motivations, we encourage you to check us out online and find out what being part of a “moms group” can do for you. We would love to meet you and become a part of this important, wonderful, exhausting time of life!
